Najmul Hossain Shanto’s hundred helped Bangladesh clinch the ODI series against New Zealand.
Shanto, Mustafizur take Bangladesh to series win
After losing the first ODI of the three-match series, Bangladesh had equalised with a six-wicket win in the second. Coming to bat at 21-2 in pursuit of 199, Shanto had scored exactly 50, his first ODI half-century since February 2025.
Now, in the decider in Chattogram, he walked out at 9-2 and saw Bangladesh slump to 32-3 after Will O’Rourke’s triple strike. Shanto then added 160 with Litton Das (76). He took 70 balls to reach his first fifty and only another 44 for his second. He fell soon thereafter, caught on the straight boundary off Jayden Lennox for a 119-ball 105. In all, he hit nine fours and two sixes.
This was Shanto’s fourth ODI hundred and his first in the format since his unbeaten 122 against Sri Lanka at Chattogram in March 2024. The effort won him the Player of the Match award.
Late blows from Towhid Hridoy (33 not out in 29 balls) and captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz (22 in 18) took Bangladesh to 265-8. O’Rourke finished with 3-32, while Ben Lister returned 2-62 and Lennox 2-50.
New Zealand then became 61-2 in response. Opener Nick Kelly made 59, but they were 124-5 when he fell. From there, only Dean Foxcroft (75 in 72 balls) put up any resistance, adding exactly 50 for the last wicket with Lister to take New Zealand to 210.
For Bangladesh, Mustafizur Rahman claimed 5-43, Nahid Rana 2-37, and Mehidy 2-36. This was Mustafizur’s sixth five-wicket haul, putting him at joint eighth on the all-time men’s ODI list.
