Kraigg Brathwaite’s 176 helped Barbados secure a massive lead against Jamaica at the Sabina Park Cricket Ground.
Brathwaite, Wickham tons take Barbados to 65-year high
In the revamped West Indies Championship, Jamaica openers John Campbell (96) and Kirk McKenzie (114) put on their second consecutive double-century stand, at Kingston. That helped Jamaica reach 457 even as Shamar Springer picked up 3-99.
In response, Brathwaite batted for eight and a half hours for his 176. Shayne Moseley (53) and Jonathan Drakes (55) helped him put on 105 and 77 for the first two wickets, but an even bigger partnership came with Kevin Wickham, who made his third consecutive first-class hundred. The pair added 377.
When Brathwaite fell, on 438, Jamaica were still in front, but Kyle Mayers hit five sixes in his 84 to put them in the lead. From 552-7, Springer (36) and Johann Layne (43 not out in 31) added a further 74 before the former fell, and Brathwaite declared immediately.
Barbados’ total of 626-8 declared is their highest total in Kingston and their highest in first-class cricket since their 664 against Jamaica in 1961/62. It is also the highest total in the Caribbean since West Indies A declared on 613-8 against Sri Lanka A in 2013.
In the time remaining, Layne (2-15) reduced Jamaica to 46-4 before Campbell, batting at No.5, made an unbeaten 42 to see them out of trouble.
