Shreyas Iyer to captain India A against Australia A; KL Rahul, Siraj also in action

On Saturday (September 6), the BCCI announced a 15-player squad to take on Australia A in two four-day matches in Lucknow later this month. The most significant news is the inclusion of Mumbai batter Shreyas Iyer as skipper. He has led India A in first-class cricket four times before, all back in 2018. Iyer captained Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024, and Punjab Kings to the final in 2025.

He was an integral part of India's Champions Trophy victory earlier this year, but did not find a place in the Test squad for the tour of England, or the T20I squad for the Asia Cup which begins on September 9. Iyer is currently playing in the Duleep Trophy for West Zone, under the captaincy of Mumbai teammate Shardul Thakur.

Iyer has not played a Test match since the home series against England in 2024, following which he even lost his BCCI central contract for 2023-24. He scored 480 runs at an average of 68.57 and strike rate of 90.22 in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season.

Delhi batter Ayush Badoni, fresh off a Duleep Trophy double century, is in line for a first-class debut for India A, having played four times in limited-overs cricket. Punjab quick Gurnoor Brar is another new face in the squad. He took 26 wickets in the most recent Ranji Trophy season, at 20.30 apiece.

Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal, Dhruv Jurel, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Prasidh Krishna are the five Test-capped players in the squad, apart from Iyer. Test regulars KL Rahul and Mohammed Siraj have also been included for the second four-day game. They will replace two squad members, whose names will be confirmed after the first match.
