Shafali Verman batting for India

Discarded India ODI opener, Shafali Verma, struck 107 off 61 ball for Haryana today (October 11), continuing her blistering form in domestic cricket.

Verma's hundred came off 57 balls, with the next-highest scorer in Haryana's innings – Deeya Yadav – out for 36. Her knock helped the side to a total of 188-3, with Verma hitting 16 boundaries in her innings.

In response, Himachal Pradesh could only reach 118-7, with only SM Singh able to pass 30. Triveni Vasistha, Amandeep Kaur and Sonia Mendhiya shared six wickets between them.

Verma responds to continued ODI snub

Verma was dropped from India's ODI side at the end of last year, after averaging 18 in her previous six innings. She had been a mainstay for India at the top of their order since 2021, when she burst onto the scene as a teenager.

However, since being dropped, she has been in stellar form on the domestic circuit in both the 50 and 20 over formats. She averaged 66.46 in India's 50-over domestic season last year, scoring three hundreds in 16 matches as well as five half-centuries. Those hundreds included a 115-ball 197 in December last year, in which she hit 22 fours and 11 sixes. Playing for India A in Australia earlier this year, she hit a half-century in the last game of the 50-over series. She also hit a 49-ball 70 for India A against New Zealand in a World Cup warm-up fixture.

Ahead of India's World Cup squad announcement, there was speculation that Verma's domestic form could lead to an ODI recall. However, India opted to stick with Pratika Rawal, who averages over 50 in ODIs since making her debut last year. The more versatile option of Yatika Bhatia was preferred as their reserve batter.

India's World Cup campaign got off to a good start against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, but they stumbled against South Africa, and picked up their first loss of the competition.
