A little bit on the history of Irani Cup
Each year, the reigning defending champions take on a Rest of India side for a one-off, five-day match called the Irani Cup. The Rest of India squad is made up of top performers from all the other teams, and the match has first-class status.
The tournament is named after Zal Irani, who served as BCCI board treasurer across two terms (1928/29 to 1945/46 and 1948/49 to 1961/62).
The first ever game between the Ranji champions and an ROI team was played in 1959/60.
