Rohit had suffered a hamstring injury during IPL 2026, and his availability for the Afghanistan ODI series was subject to fitness. However, the veteran gained full fitness in time and was named in the XI for the first ODI in Dharamshala, which was reduced to 25 overs after rain delayed its start.

Bowling coach Morne Morkel had quelled all doubts about Rohit’s fitness on the eve of the ODI, confirming the opener had “passed all his fitness tests and was cleared and ready to go”.

The India opener’s spot in the 50-over squad, the only format he plays internationally, has been under scrutiny following a lean run of form recently, especially with the ODI World Cup coming up next year, and the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad waiting in the wings. A strong series against Afghanistan, however, would put the doubters at bay for the meantime.

Rohit broke Mohinder Amarnath’s 37-year-old record. The former all-rounder made his last ODI appearance for India at 39 years and 36 days of age, against West Indies in Mumbai in October 1989. Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sunil Gavaskar complete the top five.
