Pakistan debutants Azan Awais and Abdullah Fazal impressed in their first Test outing with the bat, against Bangladesh at Mirpur.
Hundred for Azan Awais, fifty for Abdullah Fazal
Pakistan fielded two debutants in their first Test of the two-match series in Bangladesh, being played at Mirpur. Opening batter Awais, yet to play T20 cricket, was probably have debuted anyway, while Babar Azam’s injury paved the way for Fazal.
The debutants spent the first day and a significant part of the second in the field as Mominul Haque (91), Najmul Hossain Shanto (101), and Mushfiqur Rahim (71) took Bangladesh to 413 even as Shaheen Shah Afridi returned 3-113 and Mohammad Abbas 5-92.
Pakistan lost Imam-ul-Haq (45) in response, but not before a 106-run opening stand with Awais. At this point the debutants got together and took the score to 179-1 by stumps. On the second morning, Awais reached his hundred. He eventually fell to Mehidy Hasan Miraz for a 165-ball 106 (14 fours), but not before he and Fazal had put on 104.
Pakistan slipped from 210-1 to 230-5. Fazal (60 in 120 balls, seven fours, one six) was part of this mini-collapse. Salman Ali Agha (58) and Mohammad Rizwan (59) then helped them recover to 386 as Miraz finished with 5-102.
This was the 17th instance of a debutant scoring a hundred and another scoring a fifty in the same men’s Test innings, but only the fourth instance when both batted in the top three.
When bad light forced the umpires to call off the game early, Bangladesh were 7-0 in the second innings. They led by 34 runs.
