ODIs began in 1970/71, roughly around the time when one cricketing nation after another was busy shunning apartheid-era South Africa. The first ODI between Australia and South Africa, thus, had to wait until the 1992 World Cup.

With a win-loss ratio of 1.803, South Africa were the best ODI side of the 1990s. With 1.728, Australia were next. In 1998, South Africa became the first team to win the Champions Trophy and a Commonwealth Games gold medal (though there was no ODI status for the latter). Australia, meanwhile, began their golden run in 1999, winning three consecutive World Cups and, from 2006, back-to-back editions of the Champions Trophy.
