Ahead of the auction (to be held on October 7), each of the six teams at SA20 2027 were allowed to retain up to 19 cricketers, which is also the maximum squad size. If they wanted, a franchise could have retained their full set of 19 cricketers.

Joburg Super King let go of Faf du Plessis, who had led them in four seasons, marking the most significant pre-aution release of this season. Other major releases from the 2025/26 squads included Wiaan Mulder, Nandre Burger (both JSK), Jonny Bairstow (Sunrisers Eastern Cape), Trent Boult, Kieron Pollard, Rassie van der Dussen (all MI Cape Town), and Will Jacks (Pretoria Capital).
