Jason Sangha

Australia A captain Jason Sangha got his maiden first-class double ton as their second “Test” against Sri Lanka A fizzled out to a draw.

After losing the “ODIs” 1-2, Sri Lanka A did well to save the first unofficial “Test” of the two-match series. Trailing by 214 after the first innings, they had made 280-3 to save the game.

Sri Lanka A became 18-1 in the second “Test” before Kamil Mishara (81) and Nuwanidu Fernando (102) added 116 for the second wicket. Pavan Rathnayake (122), Sonal Dinusha (88), and Sohan de Livera (50 not out) then helped Pasindu Sooriyabandara declare on 485-6 even as Zanden Jeh returned 3-132.

AUS A v SL A: Jake Weatherald and Jason Sangha go big

The Australian response was led by uncapped Tasmania opener Jake Weatherald, who added 134 for the second wicket with Kurtis Patterson (59) and another 209 for the third, with Sangha. By the time Nuwanidu snared him, Weatherald had made 183. With 906 runs at 50.33, Wetherald had been the leading run-scorer in the 2024/25 Sheffield Shield.

Like Weatherald, Sangha had scored three hundreds as well in the Sheffield Shield. He had only 704 runs, but his average of 78.22 was next to only South Australian teammate Alex Carey’s 82.33. His tournament culminated in an excellent hundred in the final: chasing 270 against Queensland, South Australia were 28-3 before Sangha (126 not out) and Carey (100) put on exactly 200. A mini-collapse ensued, but Sangha saw his team to a four-wicket win.

Here against Sri Lanka A, he continued after Weatherald fell, going past his career-best of 151 and putting on 165 with Oliver Peake (92). The match petered out to a draw, but not before he got to 202 not out. Australia finished on 558-4.

Their performances might help Weatherald and Sangha stake claims for slots in the much-criticised Australian top three.
