Dewald Brevis of South Africa celebrates after reaching his century during game two in the T20 International series between Australia and South Africa at Marrara Stadium on August 12, 2025 in Darwin, Australia

South Africa youngster Dewald Brevis smashed a blistering maiden international century during his team’s second T20I of the three-match series against Australia on Tuesday (August 12).

Dewald Brevis scores second fastest T20I hundred by a South African

After losing the series opener, South Africa, in the second match, posted 218-7 – their eighth-highest total when batting first. The innings was spearheaded by Brevis' maiden T20I century, which he reached with a boundary off Ben Dwarshuis in the 15th over.

Brevis' 41-ball hundred became the second-fastest by a South African batter, surpassing Quinton de Kock's 43-ball effort against West Indies in 2023. David Miller's 35-ball century against Bangladesh in 2017 remains South Africa's fastest T20I hundred.

Australia managed to contain Brevis for his next 15 deliveries, conceding just 24 runs. Despite this, his unbeaten 125 off 56 balls became the highest individual score by a South African batter in T20Is, surpassing Faf du Plessis' 119 against the West Indies in 2015.

At 22 years and 105 days, Brevis also became the youngest South African to score a T20I century. His knock is also the highest score by a player batting at No.4 or lower in T20Is against Full Member teams, and the highest individual T20I score in Australia.

Brevis' innings featured 12 fours and eight sixes – equaling the record for most boundaries (20) by a batter against Australia in T20Is. This matches Brendon McCullum's 12 fours and eight sixes in Christchurch back in 2010 and Ruturaj Gaikwad's 13 fours and seven sixes in Guwahati in 2023.

After scoring just 5 and 0 on his debut in 2023, Brevis waited two years for his next South Africa opportunity, recently featuring in the Zimbabwe tri-series, where South Africa fell to New Zealand in the final.

His century nearly doubled his career tally of runs - entering this match with 140 runs from 8 innings at 20.00 and a strike rate of 166.66, he now stands at 265 runs at 37.85 and 189.28.
