JJ Basson, 18-year-old South African left-arm quick, broke the national record with an 11-wicket match haul on his first-class debut.
Lining up for the Lions in their CSA 4-Day Series Division 1 season opener against Boland, Basson accounted for a stunning seven-for in the first innings and followed it up with four more wickets in the second innings to finish with match figures of 11-99. These are now the best figures by a South African quick on first-class debut.
Overall, these are the third-best bowling figures on debut by a South African in first-class cricket, only behind Glen Hall (13-146) and Bruce Mitchell (11-95), both of whom were spinners. Basson broke Leo Robinson's 132-year-old national record to take the third spot in this list.

As far as the game is concerned, Basson made a memorable start to his senior red-ball career, taking the first six Boland wickets to fall to reduce them to 90-6 in reply to the Lions' 314. Lehan Botha's rescue act of an 189-ball 170 brought Boland back in the game, taking them to 348, before Basson made him his seventh victim of the innings and finished with 7-62.
The Lions, led by Ryan Rickelton's 127, declared their second innings at 312-8 to set Boland a 279-run target on the final day. Basson was at his best yet again in the second innings, picking up all four wickets to fall before the match ended in a draw.

Basson starred for South Africa Under-19 on recent England tour
Basson recently starred against England under-19 with his left-arm fast-bowling. He picked up a seven-wicket haul for South Africa U19 in their first unofficial Test on the tour of England in July this year. Overall, he picked up 15 wickets across the two red-ball games. He also took two wickets in two youth ODI appearances on the tour.
Basson has featured in a total of five List A matches, having made his debut in the format earlier this year in February. Playing for SA Emerging in the 2025-26 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge Division Two, he accounted for seven wickets at an average of 29 and an economy of 4.61.
The teenager also featured in te U19 World Cup earlier this year, and was South Africa's top wicket-taker with nine in four matches at 16 each, including a five-wicket haul.
