Priyansh Arya was run out after a bizarre sequence of events during India A’s ongoing unofficial ODI against Sri Lanka A in Dambulla.
Priyansh Arya and Ruturaj Gaikwad involved in bizarre mix-up
Arya’s partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad was going strong, with the duo having notched up a 50-run stand for the third wicket after openers Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Prabhsimran Singh departed cheaply. But right after adding their 50th run together, they were involved in a bizarre mix-up that led to Arya’s dismissal.
Gaikwad nudged the ball towards deep extra cover and called for a two, but while he returned immediately for the second run, Arya hesitated as he saw the fielder closing in and stopped. The two eventually ended up on the same side, and the bails were taken off on the striker's end.
Replays showed Gaikwad had grounded his bat first, whereas Arya’s bat was accidentally blocked by wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella’s boots as he tried to collect the throw and send it to the other end.
Ruturaj Gaikwad tons up as India A post 277-6 batting first
The Punjab Kings opener, who batted at No.3 in the A game, departed for run-a-ball 32, whereas Gaikwad went on to score his 21st List-A hundred, getting dismissed for 101. Sooryavanshi started well in his first game for India A, slamming three boundaries off his first six balls but departed for a 12-ball 14.
Captain Tilak Varma scored 60 off 97 from No.5 and built a 150-run partnership with Gaikwad. Suryansh Shedge (26 off 14) and Ayush Badoni (24 off 18) provided the finishing touches as India A finished their innings on 277-6 after 50 overs in the opening game of the tri-series, which features Afghanistan A as the third team.
