England eventually secured victory over Ireland, after Sri Lanka further dented New Zealand's chance of defending their crown in the 2026 T20 World Cup today (June 16). Here is what the group points tables look like after those results.
New Zealand face early exit after Sri Lanka loss
The defending Champions suffered their second loss of the tournament to Sri Lanka at Utilita Bowl, in a thrilling match that went down to the final over. Nilakshika de Silva scored an unbeaten half century to get her side over the line, having marshalled a recovery from 55-4 in pursuit of 151. It was another calamitous fielding performance from New Zealand, which saw three dropped catches as well as several ground fielding errors, following on from their struggles against West Indies in their tournament-opener.
That results puts New Zealand on the brink of elimination, which would see them become the first champions to go out in the group stages since England in the 2010 edition. A West Indies win over Sri Lanka this weekend would make New Zealand's path to the knockouts exceedingly difficult, while not a mathematical impossibility.
England power past Ireland
England's second game followed their script, after they hammered Sri Lanka on the tournament's opening night. A strong bowling performance, led by Sophie Ecclestone's three wickets, saw Ireland restricted to 118, although 17 runs from Louise Little off Lauren Bell's final over pushed them higher than looked likely.
However, England stuttered in the chase after losing all of their top three within 10 deliveries at the end of the powerplay. Amy Jones and Danni Wyatt-Hodge both holed out to Aimee Maguire in the same over, before Alice Capsey was bowled by a beauty from Orla Prendergast. A strong partnership between Heather Knight and Nat Sciver-Brunt combined for a 64-run partnership which saw the home side safe, maintaining their position at the top of Group B. However, Sciver-Brunt sparked concern at the end of the game when she retired hurt with nine runs needed to win.
