Biography

Afif Hossain is a left-handed batter and part-time off-spinner from Bangladesh, known for his ability to change games with quickfire knocks and useful breakthroughs. A natural stroke-maker and a utility cricketer, he has been part of Bangladesh's white-ball setup for several years. Afif made his First-class debut in 2017, followed by his List A and T20 debuts in the same year. He rose to prominence during the 2016 Bangladesh Premier League when, as a 17-year-old playing for Rajshahi Kings, he stunned cricket fans by picking up five wickets on debut — the best bowling figures on debut in BPL history at the time. The following year, he made headlines again picking up a hat-trick playing for Abahani Limited in the 2016–17 Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League. In 2018, he was also the leading run-scorer for Bangladesh in the U-19 World Cup with 276 runs. Since then, Afif has played regularly in domestic cricket, representing Khulna Division and later East Zone in red-ball cricket. He has been a consistent performer in the Dhaka Premier League and is regarded as one of the more dependable finishers in the domestic white-ball setup.

Afif made his T20I debut for Bangladesh in 2018 and announced himself with a stunning 52 off 26 balls against Zimbabwe after coming in at 60 for 6 — a knock that instantly earned him a reputation as a fearless finisher. He later made his ODI debut in 2021 and has been a regular part of the white-ball squads, known for his ability to rotate strike, find boundaries under pressure, and contribute with part-time spin. Afif was named in the Bangladesh squad for the 2021 T20 World Cup. The following year, he scored a match-winning 93 against Afghanistan which was also the highest individual score back then for a Bangladeshi batter coming in at number seven in ODIs. He has been a key part of Bangladesh’s middle-order plans, especially in T20Is, and is valued for his calmness in tight situations.

Afif has played in the Bangladesh Premier League for multiple franchises, including Sylhet Thunder, Khulna Tigers, and Fortune Barishal. He was part of Fortune Barishal’s run to the BPL final in 2022 and has often been used as a flexible batter capable of batting anywhere in the top six. Though he’s yet to play in overseas leagues, his domestic and franchise contributions have made him one of Bangladesh’s most bankable T20 cricketers.
