Biography

A wicketkeeper-batsman, Australian Darren Berry made his first-class debut for South Australia in the 1989-90 season, following which he moved to his native Victoria in the next season and enjoyed tremendous success.

A product of the Australian Cricket Academy, Berry was the second choice wicketkeeper for Australia on their 1997 Ashes tour, but could not represent his country in a single Test match. As far as keeping abilities were concerned, he was highly-rated by his teammates who watched him on the field. But, despite being really good at what he did, Berry was not awarded a place in the Australian team, due the ever-present Ian Healy. Not only was he a better keeper, but Healy had a comparatively better batting average than Berry's, which kept the latter from getting his “Baggy Green”. Many Australian greats including Shane Warne and Steve Waugh felt that he was the best player in the country to not wear the coveted Test cap. However, Berry has been Victoria's saviour and has led the team to several victories, with his sharp wicket-keeping and helpful batting.

“Chuck”, as he his nicknamed, retired from all forms of cricket in 2004. He then took to sports outside cricket, including football and boundary riding. Berry also started writing for The Sunday Age. He is the Team Manager for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL and also coaches South Australia.
