Sri Lanka had fallen behind on the over rate during their league game against the West Indies in the 2012 T20 World Cup. This posed a problem: captain Mahela Jayawardene faced a potential ban in the final if Sri Lanka fell behind in the semi-final as well. Taking no chances, Sri Lanka made Kumar Sangakkara their official captain for the semi-final. Jayawardene returned for the final.

Following this Sri Lankan switcheroo, the ICC introduced a change to their Playing Conditions. Now, no team can change the captain mid-series during an ICC event if they are selected in the XI.
