Sharjah, in the UAE, may not have a long history of cricket. But its relevance to the sport has grown rapidly since the Sharjah Cricket Stadium first hosted an international match, in 1984. In fact, in just 41 years, it is now the venue that has hosted the most men's international matches.

The UAE as a whole, but also Sharjah in particular, has become the de-facto neutral venue for most international cricket – most notably during periods where Pakistan were unable to host matches. During Covid lockdown as well, the UAE came in handy as a host venue for several tournaments, including the IPL.
