This posed a problem for Bangladesh coach Russell Domingo, for his team was scheduled to play a Test match next morning: “We have to go to bed, simple as that. You can’t be watching football till three in the morning, and play the Test that starts at 9.30 am. It is stupid. I’d be very disappointed if they did.”

But this is about football: a century ago, Argentina used to be a very strong side that beat the MCC on either side of the First World War. Had the ICC not been insistent on restricting membership to only Commonwealth Nations, they would almost certainly have played Test cricket. Instead, like all of South America – except Guyana, of course – they veered towards football.
