When the ICC was founded in 1909, the committee also drew up their first ever FTP. That featured a triangular Test tournament as well, to be played in England every four years. The first edition, played in 1912, spanned nine Tests between the three Test-playing teams in a triple-round-robin league. The three Australia-South Africa matches were the Test cricket’s first ever games at neutral venues.

Unfortunately, Australia sent a second-string side, while South Africa were simply not good enough. To make things worse, it was one of the wettest summers in a long time. And then came the First World War, ruling out even the slightest chance of an encore.

Nearly a century passed later, teams became reluctant to tour Pakistan on security grounds. Pakistan found adopted homes (mostly in the UAE). Afghanistan, yet to host a Test match, have “hosted” Tests at neutral venues as well. And then, there have been the games in the multi-nation tournaments, most famously the World Test Championship finals.
