The ICC player and team rating methodology was developed in 1987, and today remains the primary ranking system in world cricket. Players are rated from 1 to 1000 for both batting and bowling, with an all-rounder rating obtained by multiplying the two, and dividing the result by 1000.

That means for a player to receive a high rating as an all-rounder, they must be rated relatively high for batting and bowling at the same time. This is not always easy to achieve.

Only one player in the history of men's T20I cricket has ever had an all-rounder rating of 500 points or better. One other has crossed the mark of 450, and two further players have crossed 400.
