It is rare for this to happen, but he is not the first to make a surprise appearance as captain. Throughout cricket history, there have been captains who returned over a decade after their previous match – in some cases, well after they retired.
Some of these have had extraordinary circumstances, like player strikes and a mass exodus of players to a rival tournament. But others have been downright strange, like the captain who returned after four years, only to promptly retire after one game.
