The inaugural edition of the Asia Cup featured the three Test-playing nations in the continent at that point – India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Bangladesh joined soon, but it was not before the 21st century that a fifth team featured in the tournament.

With time, the Asia Cup adapted to the global demands of the sport. After six editions of day-only games – well into the 1990s, when the world had adapted to floodlit cricket – the Asia Cup finally changed. Bangladesh and Afghanistan, who got Full Membership after the launch of the Asia Cup, became permanent features over time.

With T20 rising in popularity, the tournament switched to ODIs and T20Is for alternate editions. The group structure changed, as did the number of teams in the qualifiers. However, as of 2025, the tournament is yet to witness an India-Pakistan final.
