The 2004 women's Asia Cup, the inaugural edition, was a five-match ODI series between two teams. The number of teams increased to three in 2005 and four in 2008 before jumping to eight by 2012.

Since 2012, the Women's Asia Cup has always been played in the T20I format. The last edition in 2024, and the ongoing edition in 2026, both has eight teams participating.
