When England were unable to break through in The Oval Test match of 1884, Lord Harris asked wicketkeeper Alfred Lyttelton to bowl. Amidst considerable mirth, Lyttelton bowled underarm lobs without taking his pads off as WG Grace kept wicket. It worked, for Lyttelton finished with 4-19 in 12 four-ball overs to quickly end the innings.

Things had changed significantly since Lyttelton’s times. Seldom do wicketkeepers take their pads off to bowl, especially in the quick-scoring world of ODI cricket. Even then, until March 24, 2026, a total of 16 cricketers have taken at least one wicket and effected at least one stumping in men’s ODIs.
