in 1894, Clarence P Moody published Australian Cricket and Cricketers: 1856 – 1893–94. In this book, he included a list of multi-day matches Australia and England. In the December 29 issue of Cricket, Charles W Alcock reproduced this list, added a recent entry (Sydney 1894), and referred to them as “test matches”.

The phrase caught on. Full-strength matches between England and Australia were always given “Test match” status. South Africa, the only other ICC Member before the Wars, also got belated status for their games against England or Australia. Between the Wars, the ICC had three more teams playing Test cricket – the West Indies, New Zealand, and India. This was also the phase when the first women’s Test matches were played.
