Australia played in the first ever men’s T20 International, against New Zealand at Auckland in 2005. For the first few years of the format, T20Is were largely an afterthought: one-off affairs tagged with a tour consisting mostly of Tests and ODIs. Naturally, the ODI captains often doubled as the T20I captains.

In the 2010s, however, Australia also appointed T20I specialist captains, including a cricketer who led them on his international debut. One of them, who also captained in ODIs, led them to their first T20 World Cup title, in 2021.
