Starc made his Test debut as a first-change bowler, after James Pattinson and Peter Siddle, in 2011/12. He was not a first-choice bowler to begin with, but took four Test matches to “graduate” to the new ball, and one more to get the first over.

Amidst intense competition, he had to forego that slot, but became as good as the default first-over bowler as the 2014/15 home summer against India approached its end. In that series, an Indian became the first batter to fall to him in the first over of a Test innings.

Since then, Starc has been as much a threat with in the first over as anyone else in history. At Kingston in 2025, he became only the second bowler to take three wickets in the first over of an innings.
