An Indian captain recently joined the list at the start of their 2025-27 World Test Championship campaign. He took over from Rohit Sharma, who was among the senior Indian cricketers to call time on their Test career this year. Part of India’s Under-19 World Cup-winning team in 2018, he also captains Gujarat Titans in the IPL.
Before him, a Bangladesh player – who recently became the 16th captain to score centuries in both innings of a Test – had joined the list in November 2023. Tracing further back, a Zimbabwean captain also achieved the feat against Bangladesh in 2020.

Two other active players feature on the list: an Australian and an Englishman. The Englishman is currently England’s leading run-scorer, while the Australian boasts a Test batting average of 56.55, placing him in the league of legends. Neither man is now the captain of the side.
In the history of Test cricket, 33 players have scored a century on their captaincy debut. Only two of them have achieved centuries in both innings, while two others have scored a double century.
