General perception suggests that Australian pitches, being hard and fast, assist fast bowlers. Yet, the same parts of the world produced some of the greatest spinners of all time. From Hugh Trumble to Arthur Mailey to Clarrie Grimmett to Bill O’Reilly, the list features several names from the who’s who of spin bowling – and that is without taking into account post-War giants.

Richie Benaud kept the trend going in the 1950s and early 1960s, while Shane Warne breathed new life into spin bowling on either side of the new century, while Nathan Lyon reached where no Australian finger-spinner has in Test cricket. As limited-overs cricket spread its wings, Brad Hogg and Adam Zampa joined the pantheon.
