There was a time when the handshake used to be part of cricket’s celebrations. Grainy videos of Jim Laker’s 10-wicket spell at Old Trafford in 1956 show his teammates doing little but shaking hands with him in celebration. “There were no leaps in the air, no embraces, no punching the sky, just a dozen polite handshakes as I slung my sweater over one shoulder and jogged quietly up the pavilion steps,” he recalled.

Over time, handshakes made way for more boisterous and animated cricketing celebrations, but post-match shaking of hands became a common feature at all levels. Captains shaking hands before the toss pre-dates them all, and was rightly depicted in the 2001 cricket-themed Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India.

Refusing to shake hands at the toss is, thus, generally considered unsporting (though it does not violate any Law or Playing Conditions).
