Players who make it to Test level are usually given a run of games in the side before their teams decide whether or not to persist with them at the highest level. Some become fixtures in the team throughout their career, while other might be more stop-start. Perhaps the most extreme form of ruthlessness comes in the form of the one-Test wonder – a player who played exactly one game, never to be seen again.

This was relatively more common in the early days of Test cricket, with very few teams and long gaps between matches, not to mention two World Wars in the 20th century. But there are also examples from more recent times.
