The cricket bat used to resemble a hockey stick in its early days: with little concept of technique or footwork, it was often used to scythe the ball, delivered underarm on primitive pitches. The credit for changing that to its current form John Small, who – apart from being a leading batter of the 18th century – was also a bat manufacturer who made the straight bat popular.

Despite the restrictions, the cricket bat has undergone many changes over the next centuries. Cricketers have altered the dimensions, the shape, the weight, the position of the sweet spot, even the material. Some of these have prompted changes to the Laws of Cricket.
