To keep up with the demands of the sugarcane plantations in the Caribbean, the British planters used to recruit “indenture workers” from India. Between 1838 and 1917, about 450,000 Indians arrived in the Caribbean. In 1950, Sonny Ramadhin of Trinidad became the first cricketer of Indian origin to play Test cricket for the islands.

In 1948/49, the West Indies became the first visiting team to play Test cricket in Independent India. India paid a return tour in 1952/53. The locals welcomed them warmly, especially in Trinidad, which had 50 per cent Indian population, many of them still spoke reasonable Hindi.

For many, the Indian cricketers were the first people they had seen from their homeland. They referred to these tourists as East Indians. The visitors were pleasantly surprised to find daal and chawal and puris and aloo and baingan, not only being cooked but being referred to by Hindi names.
