India beat Pakistan by five runs to win the first ever T20 World Cup (it used to be called the World Twenty20 back then). Pakistan got the trophy in 2009, and England in 2010. In 2012, Sri Lanka became the first host to enter the final. They lost to the West Indies but won the title in 2014.

In 2016, the West Indies became the first team to win the T20 World Cup twice. In 2021, Australia won their first World Cup, which was followed by England (in 2022) and India (in 2024) winning their second respective editions.
