Like several things in cricket, the women were the pioneers of the ODI World Cup. The first edition, in 1973, predated the inaugural men’s edition by two years. Until the ICC assumed control, the tournament was held at irregular intervals, with teams sometimes having to back out due to lack of funds.

The Women’s World Cup featured many firsts, most famously the first ever double hundred in an ODI across genders, by Belinda Clark in the 1997 edition. The 2017 edition is often considered a watershed moment for its impact: since then, women’s cricket has grown in popularity around the world.
