
In this quiz, you are asked to name the leading Test run-scorer in each calendar year going back to 1980.
In 1902, Clem Hill became the first to top the 1,000-run mark in Test cricket. That year, he scored 1,060 runs from 12 Tests at 55.78. By the time the list had another entry – Denis Compton’s, in 1947 – two World Wars had passed. Compton was also the first to score 1,100 in a year.

In 1958, Garry Sobers was the first to breach 1,200; in 1964, Bobby Simpson topped 1,300; and in 1976, Viv Richards raised the bar to 1,710 – a tally that has been beaten only once, by a Pakistani, in 2006.
