James Southerton was 49 years 119 days old when he played in the first ever Test match. He remains the oldest Test debutant in history, making it the oldest Test cricket record that still stands. It seemed impossible that anyone would go past him, but Miran Bakhsh (sometimes spelled Bux) came close: at 47 years 284 days when he debuted in 1954/55, he seemed almost a cricketer from the bygone era.

Of the 109 cricketers who have debuted after their 35th birthday, only 24 did it after 1980. By then, cricket had become competitive enough in most Test nations for new cricketers to break through after an age.
