In 2000/01, Steve Waugh’s all-conquering Australians arrived in India on the back of a world record winning streak of 15 Test matches. With a win in the first Test of three-match series, they stretched that to 16.

In the next Test at Kolkata, Australia slumped from 193-1 to 269-8 before recovering to 445. They then bowled out India for 171, but not before their No.6 was last out for 59. In the second innings, India switched their No.3 and No.6: when they got together, India were 232-4 – still short of the innings-defeat margin.

The pair, however, got together on the third evening and were not separated until the fifth morning. The new No.3 scored 281, at that point an Indian record, while the new No.6 got 180. They put on 376, and India set a target of 384. From 166, Australia collapsed to 212 as an Indian off-spinner followed 7-123 with 6-73. This streak-ending triumph also marked only the third instance of a team winning a Test match after following on.
