South Africa’s first two Tests, in 1888/89, were amateurish affairs. However, in 1905/06, they won not only a Test match for the first time but also claimed the series. Despite playing only about half the teams, the third-oldest Test side were a strong force in the 1950s and even stronger in the 1960s before being ostracised for two decades.
