The second edition of the World Test Championship began on August 4, 2021, shortly after New Zealand beat India in the final of the inaugural edition. India were once again bested in the final of the 21-23 edition, this time coming up short against Australia at The Oval.

The top 25 batters from the day before the edition started features several players who are now retired from Test cricket, including an India legend in the top five who called time on his Test career recently. There are also players who continue to occupy high positions in the current rankings, with the current (May 30, 2025) No.1 ranked batter also in the 2021 top five.
The top-ranked batter, who still plays for New Zealand, had a rating of 901 out of a maximum of 1,000 – a rare achievement. He was 10 points clear of the player in second place, a former Australia captain.
Three of the players in the top 10 were Australia players, with the same number also blocked out by India players. One England player, one South Africa player, one Pakistan player and one New Zealand player make up the rest of the top 10.
