During the 1911/12 Ashes, Jack Hobbs and Wilfred Rhodes put on 323 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. This was the first triple-century stand for any wicket in Test cricket. The first 400-run stand also came in an Ashes Test, between two Australians at The Oval in 1934.

Nether record stands today. An Indian opening pair put on 413 in the 1950s, but even that fell more than half a century later. In 1997 and 2006, two Sri Lankan pairs put on 576 for the second wicket and 624 for the third. These remain world records for the respective wickets. The latter even remains the first-class record for any wicket.
