Australia won the first ever Test match, against England at Melbourne in 1876/77. However, England avenged the defeat when the two teams faced again later that month at the same venue. That made James Lillywhite the first visiting captain to win a Test match on Australian soil. In 1910/11, South Africa’s Percy Sherwell joined the list. Until the late 1970s, the list expanded to only the West Indies: Jackie Grant was their first successful captain.

In the late 1970s, Northamptonshire teammates Mushtaq Ahmed and Bishan Singh Bedi led Pakistan and India to historical triumphs in Australia. Jeremy Coney of New Zealand joined them in 1985/86. Since Coney, only a Bangladeshi has joined the list, in 2026, who is part of this quiz.
