At Ahmedabad in 1983/84, Sunil Gavaskar went past Geoff Boycott’s Test record of 8,114 Test runs. Three seasons later at the same venue, he became the first to the 10,000-run mark. He remained the only one until Allan Border surpassed him in the next decade, but they remained the only five-figure men of the 20th century.

Border’s record fell in the first decade of the 21st century. As Test matches increased, several cricketers went past the 10,000-run mark. A century before Tendulkar breached the 15,000-mark, no one even had a quarter of that tally.
