Back in 1870 on a treacherous Lord’s surface, John Platts of the MCC hit George Summers of Nottinghamshire on the head with a vicious bouncer. Notts captain Richard Daft, the next man in, walked out with his head wrapped in a towel. To protect his head against the West Indian fast bowlers in 1933, Patsy Hendren batted in a three-peaked cap designed by his wife.

The story of the protective headgear in cricket is long and varied, and remained largely unaddressed until the helmet arrived in the 1970s. It is not only about protection either.
