Large-scale world tournaments featuring a plethora of teams are common in cricket, as are bilateral series. As ODIs grew in prominence between the 1980s and the 2000s, so did triangular tournaments: a single or double round-robin league, followed by a final. In Australia, this could go up to a triple, quadruple, or even quintuple round-robin league and best-of-three or best-of-five finals.

Not as common are four-nation tournaments. Perhaps it had to do with the fact that getting three teams at the same place at the same time was getting four. While rare, however, these did happen.
