In 1975/76, Ian Chappell resigned as Australian captain and played under his brother Greg. During the season, he was censured over a logo and retired at the age of only 32. However, when the leading Australian cricketers aligned with Kerry Packer, the magnate had a conversation with Ian Chappell.

“Who do you want in this f**king team of yours?” asked Packer.

Somewhat taken aback, Chappell responded: “Hang on, Kerry, I’m not the Australian captain. Greg Chappell is the captain of Australia, so I don’t think it’s really down to me as to who is in the side.”

But Packer would have none of it: “What do you think this is, son, a f**king democracy? I pay the bills, I choose the captain. You’re the f**king captain.”
