During the 1902 Ashes, Edgbaston became the sixth venue to host a Test match in England. The journey began in spectacular fashion: after declaring on 376-9, England bowled out Australia for 36 in 23 overs. Rain denied them enough time to enforce a win.

Over the years, Edgbaston produced some riveting and significant contests – most famously the 1999 World Cup semi-final between Australia and South Africa, and the Ashes classics of 2005 and 2023. It was the only Test venue to host a game at the 1973 Women’s World Cup. In 1997, it hosted the first senior professional game in England under lights. In 2017, it became the first English venue to host a pink-ball Test.
