William Clarke, the great cricketer of the first half of the 19th century, married the landlady of the inn situated to the south of the bridge over River Trent. That was in 1837. The following year, he laid a cricket ground adjacent to the inn.
In 1899, Trent Bridge became the fourth venue in England (and the tenth overall) to host a Test match. Until 1910, cricket shared the venue with football until Notts County moved to Meadow Lane.
