The Oval had hosted the first Test match in England, in 1880. Four years later, Old Trafford became the second venue in the country to host a Test – and the first to be contested for the Ashes. Hit by rain, the Test fizzled out to a draw.

Old Trafford has hosted Test cricket over the next 14 decades. During the Second World War, it was used as a transit camp for troops from Dunkirk and a storage depot for the Ministry of Supply. The venue was bombed in December 1940, killing the sentry on guard. However, cricket continued during the Second World War as German prisoners of war repaired the venue: they were paid three farthings an hour.

When cricket returned after the Covid-19 lockdown of 2020, Old Trafford was cleared as one of two biosecure venues (the Rose Bowl was the other): the six Tests of the summer were shared by the two grounds.
